SeediqBale

So tonight I went to see Seediqbale. Which is a Taiwanese movie (which is really popular here) about the beginning of the Japanese rule here in Taiwan and one of the revolts that happen during the rule. It was a very sad movie. But gave me a better insight into Taiwanese history.

There was no English subtitles in this movie. I watch it with Chinese subtitles. The movie was spoken in a Taiwanese aboriginal language, which even the Taiwanese couldn't understand. Then there was Japanese in the movie. So basically with the body language, subtitles and Japanese I could understand and get the movie.
Where should I even start . So much has happen since my last post.

Life has become a steady flow lately. From Monday - Thursday I wake up at 6:10, get on the train at 7:15 and start school at 8:30A.M. Then I have Chinese Learning from 8:30-11:30 with 2 breaks in the middle. Then in the after noon I have whatever classes is on the that day. My class schedule is different every day.

On Monday I finish school at 4:15. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday I finish at 5:10. On Thursday I finish at 3:15. Every exchange students schedule and when they finish school is different.

I also joined the art club (Fridays) and Singing Club (Tuesday). That starts next week.

I am also starting to explore the city more, by myself. I am also listening to mainly taiwanese, Japanese or Korean music now. A few days ago I bought my first two CDS.

Reading is probably the easiest for me. Speaking is coming along. It the listening which is the most difficult. My host mom says i am not listening hard enough 0_0 lol. I think my biggest fear is I won't learn the language. I already feel like a burden enough. I basically at any free moment (spare classes, lunch) will study to increase my language skills

So much has happen since my last post. But out of it all I'll talk about 3 main events.

Introduction To My Rotary Club
So every month I must do a speech to my Rotary Club in Taiwan. Each month the speech will get longer. So this month, September (which was me introducing myself), was a 1 minute speech and next month will be 3 minutes.

So on September 7th I got off school at noon and went to my clubs lunch meeting. There I ate lunch and introduce my self (as well as the other exchange student from Korea). I said:

大家好我姓賴,叫云菲。我英文名字是Maura Kathleen Aloisia ____ <---insert my last name。大家謝謝。

Hello Everyone,
My last name is Lai, I'm called Yun Fei. My English name is Maura Kathleen Aloisia ____. Thanks Everyone.

Moon Festival
Also known as Mid Autumn Festival is a time when families get together to admire the moon. In Taiwan it common to go together with family and friends and barbecue. During this festival you eat Mooncakes, known as 月餅 (yuebing). There is so many different kinds. It a cake with egg yolk in the middle. The inside is often shape as a moon ^_^
On September 9th my club got together and had a party at a Karaoke place. We basically spent the evening eating, winning money (I got 5$), getting prizes ,watching a magic show, watching a performance of a guy change faces (literally his mask he had on kept changing faces every three seconds) and singing karaoke. As I know no Chinese songs yet I sang Ashlee Simpson - Pieces of Me.

Kaohsiung

The south of Taiwan is SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!! (BTW if you did not know, Taipei ,where I live, is in the North) I seriously can not believe it. It sort of reminded me of Japan, but then again it didn't. There were so many mountains 0_0 Of course the south of Taiwan is more tropical so that means more BUGS -_- I accidently left a package of m&m in the room, in my Host Aunt's Villa (the one we stay at while in the south), and thousands of bugs took refuge in my room :( But once I got rid of the package they all went back out to who knows where.

So anyways. On the 10th to the 12th of September I stayed in Minong. Which is a small rural area in the south of Taiwan. My host aunt has a villa out there. Even though she lives in Taipei she goes out and lives in the villa during Holidays. I had a 3 day weekend (instead of 2) because it was Mid Autumn Break (or Moon Festival break).

I went with my Host 爸爸 (father), his 2 sisters, my Host Uncle and my Host Cousin.

It was a pretty cool time. Especially since I left all electronics (yes that right) at my house in Taipei. So basically I spent the weekend enjoying the view, reading and just tagging along with my family.
I did so many things during that 3 day stay:
-Went to a tree farm (a place that grows trees...like palm trees). This place grows trees and then makes products out of them such as coffee, tea cup holders, skin care products ect; I also saw a 200 year old tree 0_0
-Of course since the south is such a tropical place I got to eat and see a lot of fruits. I got to see Bananas and drink coconut juice. I also got to drink something called Pineapple & Vinegar (which surprisingly isn't a bad combination). I also came to the conclusion that I do not like coconut juice & soybean milk. Soybean milk is more popular here then milk. Taiwanese are all about what's healthy.

On my second day I went to Kaohsiung. Which is the second largest city in Taiwan. It about a hour from Minong. My host father works and lives there during the week. Then commutes by train back to Taipei on Weekends. BTW I have also come to the conclusion that I do not like the bullet train. It gives me a headache. It goes to fast 0_0
This city is very cute. It has big buildings and is not crowded, like Taipei, (or as crowded). It has mountains peaking out in the background as well . Sadly even though I love Kaohsiung, I am in love with Taipei more. Something about the quick atmosphere a peals to me.

Also in the south no one speaks english :) So I learn a lot of Chinese. In Taipei so many people speak English . And the signs always have English. It kind of makes it hard to learn Chinese.

Though in Minong, near the villa, I met a girl (age 25) who could speak very good English. Her family is friends with my host aunt and uncle. We talk and play around on the internet for about a hour or so. It was fun.

But anyways in Kaohsiung we ate at a restaurant , saw my host father's work, went furniture shopping and went to a cafe (engrish sign of the cafe is above). IT HAD THE BEST HAZELNUT LATTE EVER.

I also got to meet my host cousins friend. hmm....what else. I basically just enjoyed the week and the scenery. BUT SERIOUSLY....if any of you ever come to Taiwan you must see the south. It is just breath taking .
Well Until Next time
